European Settlement | 1840
Current Population | 542 approx.

Balmoral known as 'Darrangurt' by the local Koori people, is a picturesque small village
town attractively surrounded by Mathers Creek and the Glenelg River. Balmoral is the gateway to explore the beautiful Rocklands Reservoir (constructed by 600 workers in the early 1950s), and the Black Ranges.

From around 1700 A.D., the indigenous peoples cleverly constructed a drainage systems covering an area of about 3 km, joining two swamps. When rain arrived the swamps would overflow and eels were flushed into the drainage system channels where traps were
set to catch the eels. Sections of the eel
traps have been well preserved.

By 1840 European Settlement commenced
and several homesteads from the 1840s still remain today such as 'Fulham' in the 1840s
and 'Congbool' homestead, on Mathers Creek,
a timber-slab homestead constructed 1842.

Balmoral is a hidden gem in the Grampians and a must visit location.
