Sometimes you just need to get away!
Mount Napier is the youngest volcano in Victoria, there are many lava flow features that are remnants from the last stages of volcanic activity believed to have occurred about 8,000 years ago. Byaduk caves were formed when the surface air formed a crust, with molten lava flowing beneath. After the molten lava flows come to an end, a hollow tube was left behind. Byaduk caves have only one cave open to the public - Harmans 1. Walking tracks follow the cave edges and have a number of viewing points.
Bentwing bats spend winter in some of the Byaduk caves. To avoid winter food shortages the bats slow their body systems down in what is known as torpor where their body temperature matches that of their surroundings. Disturbance during this period can kill them. The caves are closed during the torpor period. Appropriate footwear and clothing are required, along with a torch.
