Set in a picturesque valley at the foot of tablelands, Coleraine’s surrounding landscape provides spectacular scenic views.

Coleraine became well known for horseracing after European Settlement and a famous race
- The Great Western Steeplechase was first raced in 1857. The race was through the town, over gardens, paddocks fences and any other obstacles obstructing the riders way. Poet Adam Lindsay Gordon was a regular rider in the event and his poem 'The Fields of Coleraine. sets the scene and feel of this amazing horse race.

For the fishing enthusiast, a place not to miss is Konongwootong Reservoir, one of the best fishing locations in the Southern Grampians,
always well stocked with Trout and Redfin.

Peter Francis Arboretum covers 37 hectares and is the home to over 2 000 native plants with about 500 eucalypt species and a great view of Coleraine and the undulating tablelands can be seen from the lookout at Peter Francis Arboretum.
