Hamilton

Koori Name: 'Mulleraterong'

Hamilton | Southern Grampians Grampians, Victoria, Australia

Koori Traditional Owners
Gunditj Mirring | 40,000 years
European Settlement | 1853
Current Population | 9,379 approx.

Hamilton became a town in 1928, and a city in 1949, with a prosperous wool growing heritage. Hamilton has many grand buildings, majestic homesteads, along with beautiful gardens and Churches established throughout the City - well worth a historic town tour.

The Henty brothers from Portland were the
first Early Settlers to arrive in 1837, others soon followed. Trouble soon arouse as the traditional Korri clans of the region considered Hamilton 'Mulleraterong' as their natural feeding and trading grounds, they were strongly opposed to the arrival of the Scottish Settlers, over time, causing many atrocities. Recent history records that - in 2007 the Australian Federal Courts set findings that the Gunditj Mirring are the right owner of these lands.

By 1851, with the Gold rush well in progress at Ballarat, Hamilton experienced a population growth triggering an increase in the demand for food prompting the arrival of many German Lutherans from South Australia who played a large role in the development of agriculture in the district.
